The rapier marshall leads the Barony's rapier fighters. He is responsible for holding practices, introducing new fighters to the rules and artistry of rapier fighting, leading Fontaine's rapier troops on the War field, and keeping up on changes to the Kingdom and Society rapier regulations.
Every Sunday at 2:00 PM at Kiwanis Park in Farmington. (Near Si Senor, across the street from the Conoco Phillips building)
In the SCA, we attempt to recreate the late medieval art of the sword, as described by the Masters in the late 16th century. The rapiers we use are a reasonably close approximation of those used in period, although the edges are not sharpened, and we blunt the tips (as with all SCA combat, safety is the main concern). The average SCA rapier is approximately 35" in blade length, although this is not a rule, and much longer blades are often used.
For armor, we wear modern fencing masks, armor made of thick cloth, and gloves. In SCA fencing, the entire body must be covered - no skin may be left showing. Any location on the opponent's body is a legal target for a hit; head, torso, and groin shots are kills, any other hit disables the limb. See the rules for more details.
Unlike runway (or Olympic) fencing, the participants are allowed to move in any direction, and may use a device in their off hand to parry or attack. We study (and try to emulate) the fighting styles written about by the Period Masters, although many fighters develop their own styles.
